smart BASIC now at Rosetta Code

smart BASIC is now fully setup at Rosetta Code (http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Category:Smart_BASIC). Rosetta Code is a great place to find code examples for all kinds of programming languages for learning and comparison. It includes a standard list of code challenges for programmers to try to accomplish in various programming languages. I've found it very helpful as a technical writer in helping me identify languages by their code structures and commands (I would often be given code without documentation or even description to write functional procedures for and would have to first identify what language they were written in to begin with).

Someone had already entered code specifically for sB for the "Arithmetic/Complex" entry but I couldn't find a name or account attached to it (anyone?) I included it in the list for sB and added some of my own feeble attempts at a handful of challenges. The challenges can be simple "For Loops" or "Comments" up to more complex mathematical and scientific processes. The standard list of challenges is quite long - enough to tantalize just about any programmer.

I decided to do this because it was made apparent to me that my communications on this forum could be easily misconstrued as somehow manipulative or deceptive in purpose. Instead of reacting like an adult to these accusations and assuring all that my intentions were nothing more than passionate interest in seeing something I have learned to love in smart BASIC grow and flourish, I acted like an insufferable, childish jackass and lashed out in what my inner child would easily insist was self-defense. In doing so, I alienated myself from two of the most prolific forum contributors as well as Mr Kibernetic, for which I am sincerely apologetic. I also created a horrible negative feeling within the forum in my wake that was simply uncalled for. In short, I'm very sorry everyone. After contributing several updated versions of documentation for the Xcode SDK procedure, numerous bug reports, and a suggestion that lead to a huge reduction in compiled application file size, it never occurred to me that my actions could appear disingenuous. I was mistaken and over-reacted. I should be much more adult about such things.

In spite of me, I hope you will all check out Rosetta Code and try your hand at the programming challenges. I'll bet some of you could really show us how it's done and maybe even show off a little bit with your programming prowess. Then everybody wins. I just want people to see smart BASIC out there and say to themselves, "What?! You can program Xcode in BASIC? Why am I banging my head against the wall with these other ridiculously complicated languages?"

There's a great link on the Rosetta Code smart BASIC page that lists all of the uncompleted challenges. Check it out! And if you do write some code for a challenge, please be sure to share it with the forum here so everyone can get a chance to marvel at your work.

Welcome back, Scott. It took a lot of courage for you to make these comments, and I applaud you. For the past week I have run over that first email of mine in great detail, wondering how I could have said it differently, or better or maybe not at all. I apologize too, for the exchange that followed. Let's put it behind us now.

I will definitely be checking out Rosetta Code, and I look forward to our association on the Forum.

All the best for Christmas to you and your family.
The only thing that gets me down is gravity...
